Maria del Sol Fortea Sevilla, Maria Olga Escandell Bermúdez, José Juan Castro Sánchez,
AbstractThis article focuses on the epidemiology of ASDs, looking for reasons to explain the increase in cases of autism around the world and the consequences of such increase in how the disorder is perceived and how it is dealt with by all social agents. We consider significant the recent findings made by Fombonne (2009) which put the increased prevalence in recent decades down to several causes: the extension of the concept of autistic spectrums, the expansion of the diagnostic criteria, the creation of specialized services and a better knowledge of the pathology. However, other factors that also contributed to the increase cannot be ruled out.
