BARREIRAS E DETERMINANTES DA INTENÇÃO DE PROCURA DE AJUDA INFORMAL NA DEPRESSÃO

Luís Manuel de Jesus Loureiro

Abstract

Depression is a highly prevalent disorder in adolescents and young adults, and may significantly affect their development potential and endanger the personal and professional future. In this sense, seeking informal help is considered a first step to accessing health care, avoiding the worsening of problems and its evolution to chronicity situations. Data from the present quantitative study (descriptive-correlational), [framed in a project (PTDC/CPE-CED/112546/2009), funded by national funds FCT/MCES (PIDDAC) and co-financed by FEDER through COMPETE - POFC of QREN], were collected through the application of QuALiSMental (Loureiro, Pedreiro & Correia, 2012) to a sample of 4938 adolescents and young people, who attend 3rd cycle and secondary education schools in the center region of mainland Portugal. The results of the study show that 3 in every 5 adolescents and young people would ask for help in a depression situation. Familiarity with depression does not contribute to help seeking neither the accentuated personal and perceived stigma about depression. We conclude that it is essential to intervene in terms of the creation and development of programs aimed at increasing mental health literacy of adolescents and young people.
