LA INCIDENCIA DEL NISTAGMUS EN LA EFICIENCIA LECTORA DE ALUMNOS CON BAJA VISIÓN IMPACT OF NYSTAGMUS ON READING EFFICIENCY OF STUDENTS WITH LOW VISION

Carlos Manuel Santos Plaza, María Elena Del Campo Adrián

Abstract

Most of the students with low vision use printing reading like a way to access to the information. Many of them have an ocular motility disorder called nystagmus. Different manuals in our country state that this disorder affects to reading comprehension causing a great visual fatigue (e.g. Ortiz y Matey, coord., 2011). In order to verify the influence of the nystagmus on the reading speed and comprehension an study was carried. The study compared two groups of students with visual impairments (with and without nystagmus). The groups were homogeneus in the control variables. The researchers didn t found statistically significant differences (Santos y al,1997). In a following general study the reading process of students with low vision studding ESO were compared. In this study three groups were established i) students with nystagmus ii)student with a light nystagmus and iii) students without nystagmus. The results obtained by the three groups were very similar (Santos y Campo, 2008). It can be considered that many visual impared students with nystagmus use an adaptive mechanism. This mechanism minimizes the effects of the ocular motility disorders allowing them to realize a comprehensive reading. In the other hand the speed, accuracy and rate of their reading process are similar to the rest of their peers with low vision. Different authors confirm that nystagmus doesn t imply a low reading capacity.
