Abstract

Introduction. Mathematics is a subject in which students typically fail due to the need of mathematical and reading academic knowledge and the involvement of cognitive and metacognitive processes. Objective. To study witch mathematical processes differentiate between students which different level of mathematical and reading performance. Participants. 128 fourth grade students participated in the study, divided in four groups: 1) students with mathematical difficulties (MD), 2) students with reading difficulties (RD); 3) students with MD+RD, 4) control group. Intelligence, reading comprehension and mathematical performance (calculation, mathematical problem solving, numerical series, anterior and posterior number, numerical quantities and numerical decomposition) were evaluated. MANCOVA test were conducted. Results. Statistical significant differences were found between all groups and all variables.

Keywords: Mathematical learning difficulties. Mathematical processes. Reading comprehension. Reading difficulties.
