AbstractWe present the steps followed in the development of a new scale for assessment of students’ engagement in school. After collecting the items and their pilot study, we proceeded to the application of a scale version entitled “Students’ Engagement in School: A Four-Dimensional Scale” (SES- 4DS). The sample included both male (291) and female (388) students, schools from different regions of the country and different school years: 6th (138), 7th (170), 9th (197), and 10th (180) grades. We proceeded the study of reliability, as well as construct and external validity. The factorial analysis of the principal components with varimax rotation revealed four dimensions of students’ engagement in school: cognitive, affective, behavioral and agency. The total variance explained by such factors appeared quite high (57.91%), as well as the internal consistency coefficients (alpha indices), varying between 0.87 e 0.70, for different groups. In the external validity study, correlations were highly significant and very consistent. The results highlight the good qualities of SES-4DS, which is made available for future investigations regarding students’ engagement in school.
