Abstract

The present study aims to analyze the levels of Acceptance / Rejection by students of higher education towards the adoption of children by homosexual couples. We conducted a study with a nonprobability sample, through an online questionnaire involving 695 subjects, 215 males and 477 females, aged 17 to 60 years. Data collection was done through the Attitude Scale Face the Adoption of Children by Homosexuals, the Scale Explanations of Homosexuality. The results showed a significant difference in favor of the acceptance factor, and the higher the age, the lower the acceptance of adoption by homosexual couples. Considering the explanation of homosexuality, the youngest subjects tend to associate it with psychosocial factors, while older with ethical-moral and religious concerns. We also verified that female shows more attitudes of tolerance and acceptance. The level of religiosity is related to lower acceptance. Our conclusions are in line with many studies who claim that the idea that lesbians and gays have no parenting skills are consequently of prejudice. We discuss that is unfair to deny the possibility of many children being loved and educated by those who can afford to love and educate them.
