Engagement e burnout em professores portugueses.

Maria Ilidia Silva / María Consuelo Morán Astorga. pp. 63-72

Abstract

Recently, there have been profound changes in public schools regarding changes on teachers’ role, who are increasingly confronted with new tasks arising from the bureaucratization of the pro-fession and also the reassign of educational roles of family to the school. These changes can be pre-dictors of a malaise which affect the physical and psychological well-being and the labor commit-ment of teachers, getting more exposed to suffer from chronic occupational stress: burnout. We wanted to know if there is a relationship between the dimensions of burnout and engagement and prove that there is some influence of engagement on burnout in Portuguese teachers. The data was collected through the MBI (Maslach Burnout Inventory) to evaluate the burnout and Work Engagement Scale Utrecht to assess the engagement with a sample of 94 teachers from pre-school education until secondary school. The results show negative and significant relationships between burnout and engagement. We also found the positive correlations between personal fulfillment, vigor, dedication and absorption, confirming the hypothesis that the engagement presents a poten-tial value in predicting the well-being in teachers.
