Abstract

For a long time it was believed that the emotional functioning in the elderly, such as the physi-cal and cognitive functioning, declined. Recent studies have come to refute this idea, stating that with the progress of age there is an affective maturity. This work presents an inventory of emotions that the elderly Portuguese people identify, as well as the emotional valence, which is assigned to each emotion. To this end, two studies were carried out. In the first study, 92 seniors participated and allowed to determine the production frequency evoked responses to the target category “emotions”. In the second study was determined the emotional valence of the exemplars produced in the first study. 68 seniors of 92 participated that were present in the first study.
Out of the 18 emotions obtained, none was considered neutral emotion, 5 (27.7%) were con-sidered as positive and or even very positive and the remaining 13 (72.2%) were assessed as neg-ative emotions or even very negative. The results obtained not only contribute to a better under-standing of cognition in the elderly, as suggest the importance of intervening with the elderly valu-ing preferred expression of positive emotions.
